About Me

Background

I am a Consultant at the Osborn Neurorehabilitation Unit at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and the Trust lead for Brain Injury.

I am a highly experienced physician in Rehabilitation Medicine. This is the science of restoring function to individuals after injuries such as stroke, brain injury, cerebral palsy, trauma and other neurological disorders that cause disability. I have considerable expertise in these and other conditions including the management of spasticity (with botulinum toxin), complex pain syndromes and amputees.

As well as having an extensive research and publication record, I also have significant experience of producing high quality medicolegal assessments and reports in brain injury, amputation medicine and cerebral palsy.

Education and Training

I studied Medicine at Cambridge and Edinburgh Universities and subsequently trained in Edinburgh and London (UCLH and Royal Free) Teaching Hospitals in General Medicine and Diabetes/Endocrinology. These medical skills are vital in everyday patient management. The realisation that my skills were better suited to specialisation in neurological and physical rehabilitation led to a switch and I trained in Edinburgh in Rehabilitation Medicine at one of the foremost research and training centres in the UK.

I took up my Consultant post in Sheffield in 2007.

I was elected as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 2010.

I completed my MD on the Assessment of Mood Disorders after Brain Injury

Teaching, Research and Committees

I am an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Sheffield, with extensive local teaching responsibilities for medical students and trainee doctors and give several lectures every year on my specialty and Medical Ethics, which is one of my main interests.

I have lectured widely at international meetings including World Congress, International Brain Injury Association, and European Society of Rehabilitation Medicine.

I have a strong and extensive research and publication output, and have won several prizes, including the Myre-Sim Bursary, Philip Nichols Prize and George Murdoch Award.  My work includes some of the largest ever studies on brain injury outcome which help to guide the best treatment.  Some of my recent papers shows the cost savings that Rehabilitation Medicine can produce by restoring function and improving quality of life, outcomes data on over 2000 TBI cases, the effectiveness of spasticity management using goals setting and the impact of COVID19 on Rehabilitation Services.

I am the UK delegate on the European Executive Committee for Rehabilitation Medicine and I am a co-author on the European Guidelines and Trainee Manual for Rehabilitation. I am also the National Training Programme Director for UK Rehabilitation Medicine, responsible for organising the teaching content for all UK trainees.
